A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
