Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
